Subtext is Center Theatre Group's year-long residency for playwrights across Los Angeles, ending in a three-day festival of rough staged readings where audiences experience plays in progress and share feedback. Created to support bold new voices, the program gives playwrights space to take risks and develop new work.

Its identity is rooted in writing and process rather than cliché theatrical visuals. A generative typographic tool shaped its visual language, making it intentionally text-heavy and turning the program's central idea into a graphic device. It invites viewers to visually and literally read between the lines, while the layout references script formatting through centered titles and subtitles with left-aligned body copy. The color palette draws from Post-it notes as a nod to brainstorming and development.

The generative sketch ultimately shaped the brand's visual language, resulting in an intentionally text-heavy identity that turns the program's central idea into a graphic device. The tool allows users to customize font size, text alignment, line spacing, tracking, magnification, and the offset of the bolded text, while supporting high-quality PNG exports for use across print and digital media.

A keepsake notepad was designed for both the playwrights and the audience, offering space for note-taking and brainstorming while also sharing information about the program and the cohort of playwrights in residence. It gives both groups a way to engage more closely with the work, whether through process notes, feedback, or reflection.

The website's landing page features the generative typographic tool as an interactive entry point, allowing users to type into the system themselves and see their words transform live, reinforcing the idea of reading between the lines while introducing the concept behind Subtext.
